for cotton on silk embroideries Over the years the art of Embroidery has been honed in Afghanistan by girls and women. This is the famous whitework embroidery, locally known as ‘khamak’ and is worked in satin stitch on a fine white cotton background with silk threads. The satin stitch is traditionally worked from the reverse side of the material, and great care is taken to ensure that the front and back of the embroidery look alike.
The satin stitch is a widely used embroidery technique worked in close, parallel rows. They are used to fill in all or part of a design. These embroidered imitations created in colonial India in 1920’s, copy Afghani techniques and motifs. Though Afghani embroidery is filled with examples of geometric designs, they also offer a plethora of motifs inspired from nature.
